Keck Institute for Space Studies Welcomes Michael Watkins as New Director
January 2026 — The Keck Institute for Space Studies (KISS) is pleased to announce the appointment of Michael M. Watkins as Director.
Dr. Watkins is a Professor of Aerospace and Geophysics at Caltech and former Director of JPL. In his 27-year JPL career, he was a leader in both engineering and science, including as Mission Manager for the Curiosity rover, Project Scientist for GRACE, GRACE Follow-On, and GRAIL, and heading the Science Division. He has been recognized by his peers as a member of the National Academy of Engineering, Fellow of the AIAA, Fellow of JPL, and NASA, national, and international awards.
As Director of KISS, Watkins will guide the Institute’s strategic vision, oversee its interdisciplinary study program, and foster collaborations that advance innovative research at the intersection of science, engineering, and space exploration.
KISS Executive Director, Harriet Brettle, said of his announcement, “Mike brings a remarkable depth of experience and leadership to KISS, having previously served as Director of JPL, with his career spanning scientific leadership and mission development at the highest levels.
