Soil Management short course poster

Program:

Lecture 1 – "Climate, GHG Mitigation and CO2 Removal - A Role for Soils?" – David Schimel

  • A big picture overview of climate, decarbonization and potential role of soils
  • 'Global carbon cycle', '1500 Pg C in top m of soil globally', 'Estimates of potential CO2 removal globally or US'

Lecture 2 – "Dynamics of Soil Organic C and Soil GHG Emission in Agriculture – Environmental and Management Driver" – Hanna Poffenbarger

  • Ecosystem-scale framing
  • General ecology/biogeochemistry of SOM dynamics and soil GHGs in agricultural systems including management (and climate, edaphic) effects
  • Bringing people up to speed on e.g., what controls OM levels in soils, decomposition, and stabilization processes, N20&CH4 emissions
  • What determines turnover rates, how can management affect processes and rates, etc.

Lecture 3 – "Measurement and Modeling of Soil C and Soil GHGs" – Stephen Ogle

  • How we quantify (i.e., measure and model) soil carbon stocks and stock changes and soil GHG fluxes
  • Models and processes in the models that are used to simulate soil C stock and GHG (CO2, N2O, sometimes CH4) fluxes, primarily at ecosystem-landscape scales

Lecture 4 – "Earth Observation of C Dynamics of Agricultural Landscapes" – Christian Frankenberg

  • Remote sensing of plant and soil systems that can inform on soil carbon and soil GHG dynamics
